These families consisted primarily of Dutch farmers and there is much speculation regarding whether the name Tappan is of Dutch or Native American origin. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington used the community as his headquarters and today you can still find historic landmarks and 1960s split-level homes interspersed on well-maintained tree-lined streets in town.

This is a special place where children are continuously digging up musket balls, glass bottles, and arrowheads from Colonial times. The DeWint House, constructed in 1700, housed George Washington on four occasions, is Rockland County’s oldest existing house, and is now home to a Revolutionary War Museum. Furthermore, at the end of September each year, the museum hosts “Country Days” and artisans dressed in Colonial attire demonstrate candle dipping and help children make apple cider on an antique press. Beyond all of the history-related sites, Tappan also has many modern amenities, including a few shopping centers located along Route 303. That said, most residents of Tappan do the bulk of their shopping in Orangeburg or New Jersey.

Tappan real estate is primarily single-family homes. In fact, roughly eighty-five percent of real estate in Tappan consists of single-family homes. The town has two condos that rarely have resales available and one townhome complex dedicated to seniors. That said, many homes have accessory apartments for students or the elderly.
